Several wild species of Thymus (T. tosevii ssp. tosevii, T. tosevii ssp. tosevii var. longifrons, T. tosevii ssp. tosevii var. degenii, T. tosevii ssp. substriatus, T. longidens var. lanicaulis and T. moesiacus) have been used in Macedonian folk medicine. The composition of the essential oils of these species was determined by GC and GC-MS methods. No qualitative variation was noted in the composition of the oils and all samples collected contain the same components. Considerable quantitative variation of certain components was found, including thymol, carvacrol, p-cymene, beta-pinene, gama-terpinene, linalool, geraniol, geranyl acetate and terpenyl acetate. The majority of the samples contained essential oil with higher quantities of phenolic constituents, thymol and carvacrol, followed by linalool, geraniol, terpenyl acetate, p-cymene and gama-terpinene. A few samples, especially those from T. moesiacus, contained essential oil with lower amounts of phenols and higher amounts of linalool, geraniol, terpenyl acetate and geranyl acetate. There were also samples which contained essential oils with trace amounts of phenols and higher quantities of other components.
