The effect of heavy metals on the content of essential elements in pea (Pisum sativum L.)

The effect of Cd, Pb, Ni and Mo on the accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in soil-cultural young pea plants was investigated. The tested heavy metals, especially at higher concentrations in the soil, significantly reduced the total nitrogen content, both in the above-ground plant parts and roots. With the increase of metal concentration in the soil, the phosphorus content significantly increased in the above-ground parts, but remained constant in roots. The effect of the tested heavy metals on the potassium content, especially in roots, was specific and depended on the nature and applied concentration of each metal. On the basis of the results it can be concluded that heavy metals significantly effect the uptake, accumulation, and distribution of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Having in mind that nitrogen and phosphorus are essential constituents of various organic compounds and that potassium plays a role in some metabolic precesses in plants, it is obvious that increased concentrations of heavy metals cause reductipon but also deterioration of quality of produced organic matter.
