Importance of non-simbiotic nitrogen fixation in corn production

Ten highly active Azotobacter strains were studied for efficiency in two corn hybrids (Mica and NSSC-640). One control variant contained of nitrogen and of Azotobacter, while the other three controls contained different nitrogen levels (30, 60 and 90 kg/ha). After the end of growing season, corn plants were analyzed for yield, total number of microorganisms and dehydrogenase activity. Azotobacter activity was higher in Mica than in NSSC-640. In the variants with Azotobacter application, increases were registred in the total number of microorganisms, except fungi, and dehydrogenase activity.
