Effect of manure on the yield of highland natural pasture

In the higher altitudes of Northern Shewa, the surplus manure is sold as dung cake. On the other hand, farmers are often forced to purchase hay during the dry season to minimize the weight loss of their animals or prevent death due to lack of feeds. Different rates of manure and inorganic fertilizers were evaluated for four years with objective of identifying a minimal rate of manure which would increase natural pasture production for dry season livestock feed and assess the residual effect of manure on the pasture. Among the treatments tested, application of manure at the lowest rate (1t/ha) improved pasture yield by 15, 31, and 42 over the untreated pasure in the first, second, and third year, respectively. After applying manure once, pasture dry matter yield was significantly increased (p less than) for at least two years after the year of application due to the residual effect of manure. The proportion of the indigenous legumes in the pasture was also higher due to either manure or fertilizer application compared to the control.
