Yield and yield components of sweet potato as influenced by plant population

Five between-row and four-between plant spacings were evaluated using medium maturing semi-trailing type of sweet potato variety (Koka-6) at Awasa and Areka Research Centers from 1990-1993 to determine the optimum plant population for sweet potato production. A randomized complete block design (RCBD) in four replications was used. Stand percent at harvest, green top yield, number of roots per plant, mean weight per root, and root yield were noted. At both locations, in all the trial seasons, the highest plant population per unit area gave better root yield. On the other hand, the highest number of roots and the highest mean root weight were obtained from wider spacings. Stand percent at harvest increased as plant population increased. Although the yield was not significantly affected by plant population, better marketable yield was obtained from the spacing of 60 cm between rows and 30 cm within rows, and this spacing was also found economical for planting material utilization and convenient for crop management. This spacing, therefore, can be recommended for Awasa, Areka And similar locations for medium maturing semi-trailing sweet potato varieties.
