Effect of compost and NP fertilizer on growth and yield of maize and pepper
1996
Tadese Yohanes | Abdisa Gemeda (Bako Agricultural Research Center (Ethiopia))
Two experiments have been conducted at Bako Research Centre during 1988/89-1990/91 period to establish the effect of compost, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers on maize and pepper yields. The soil is reddish brown Nitosol, of clayey texture with low available phosphorus and medium nitrogen content. Five levels of compost and three levels of NP fertilizer plus one satellite treatment were used. The maximum yields obtained were 17.3 q/ha for pepper and 48.8 q/ha for maize applying 200 q/ha compost plus 37.5 N and P kg/ha. The economical evaluation, however, revealed that the application of 50 q/ha compost plus 25 N and 11 P kg/ha was very profitable for both crops. Soil analysis carried out at the beginning of the trial and at the harvesting time in each season showed that soil organic carbon and total nitrogen tending to increase slightly with the addition of compost.
