The effect of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers on seed yield of gomenzer under monocropping at Adet

Gomenzer, in Adet area is mainly grown as intercrop in maize or finger millet and also as sole crop in small acreage. Farmers rarely use inorganic fertilizers for Gomenzer production. An experiment consisting of five combinations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) was carried out on red and black soils of Adet Research Center from 1987 to 1990 to determine the effect of N and P fertilizers on seed yield of gomenzer. The N and P rates were 0/0.46/0, 0/20, 46/20 and 69/30 kg N/P per ha. A randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated four times was used. A highly significant response to fertilizer rates was observed in both soil types. The highest mean seed yield of 12.72 and 3.73 q/ha on red and black soils, respectively, was obtained by the application of the highest levels of N/P (69/30, kg/ha). There was a decline in yield starting from the second year, owing to monocropping. the reduction in seed yield was as high as 87.76 percent on red soil and total crop failure on black soil.
