Gene flow between genetically modified plants and wild relatives

Genetic modification is an additional tool for conventional plant breeding to improve the application and quality of crop plants. Within the next few years an increasing number of transgenic crops will be commercialised and they will most likely contribute significantly to future agriculture. However, since the introduction of transgenic plants in the environment, the regulation of biosafety of these crops has been discussed and developed. Such biosafety assessment includes aspects like gene dispersal and introgression of (trans)genes into their wild relatives. Here, we will focus on putative hybridization with wild relatives of three crop species: sugar beet, potato and oilseed rape.
