Development of a GIS database for polluted agricultural lands of Bulgaria

A Geographic Information System (GIS) for polluted lands has been created, with a database containing information for soils contaminated by heavy and toxic elements, radionucleides, petroleum products and human induces salinisation and alkalization of the soils. The structure of the GIS database has been designed on the basis of the so called Four Level Concept. National quantitative criteria and standards values have been developed to assess the quality of the polluted soils, taking into account the negative effects of the soil degradation on the soil functions.
