The combining ability and some genetic characters of five sunflower inbred lines differing in the fatty acid contents of their seed oil were analyzed. The type of inheriting the quantitative characters: linoleic, oleic, stearic and palmitic acid contents which determine sunflower seed oil quality, was investigated. It was found that incomplete dominance of genes and overdominance of the character stearic acid content play the main role in the genetic control of the characters linoleic, oleic and palmic acid contents. High values were found for the coefficients of inheritance concerning the four fatty acids, which indicate their considerable genetic control and prove the efficiency of selection in their case.
