Jaerv, P. | Suurmaa, A. (Estonian Agricultural University, Tartu (Estonia). Inst. of Animal Science)
In 1995-97 the crossbreeding experiments were carried out with the following test groups: Piedmont x Estonian Black-and-White , Limousin x Estonian Black-and-White, Limousin x Estonian Red, Charolais x Estonian Red, Aberdeen-Angus x Estonian Black-and-White, Aberdeen-Angus x Estonian Red and control-groups of purebred cattle. The experiments showed, that all crossbred animals exceeded their purebred contemporaries in fattening and meat performance characteristics as well as meat quality indices. The best meat performance characteristics had the crosses of Limousin beef breed with both Estonian dairy cattle breeds. The dressing percentage of crosses was by 3-5 per cent higher than that of purebreeds. Their carcasses contained by 3-4 per cent more lean and 2-3 per cent less bones compared with purebreeds
