In 1997...1998 the external features of different breeds of bees were studied in Estonia. The body weight (mg), the length of proboscis and wing (mm), the width of tergite and wing (mm), the tarsal and cubital index (per cent) of bees were observed. The result of investigation show that Carniolan bees were 15 mg lighter than crossbreed and Italian bees and their tergite was 0.40...0.44 mm wider. The proboscis of Italian bees was 0.25...0.71 mm longer and wing 0.21...0.39 mm longer, the tergite was 0.47...0.44 mm wider, compared with the crossbreed and Carniolan bees. There were many widepaw bees among Carniolan bees. All the investigated breeds of bees had low cubital index. This indicates a small influence of Nigra bees and a strong influence of Carniolan bees on crossbreed bees in Estonia. Carniolan and Italian bees with long proboscis had longer wings, compared with crossbreed bees. The honey production of Italian bees was by 12 kg higher in 1998 and by 23 kg higher in 1997, compared with that of the crossbreed and Carniolan bees. Therefore we consider the Italian bees to be more suitable for Estonia
