Changing in some qualitative and quantitative characteristics of alfalfa crown with sward ageing
1998
Lillak, R. | Linke, A.
Results of that investigation showed a close relationship between crown and taproot characteristics and variety individuality. 'Pondus' alfalfa exceeded local 'Karlu' by 14 per cent heavier crown and 9 per cent larger taproot diameter, but surpassed by number of tillers and DM content in crown tissues. With ageing dimension and weight of the grown and taproot increased rapidly. In the same time DM content of the crown and sward age seems to be negatively correlated. Changing in number of tillers depended mostly on variety characteristics - in 'Karlu' the tendency for decreasing the number of tillers with ageing, and in 'Pondus' for increasing were observed. Started from spring 1996 the feeding furrows of clover root curculio were noticed on roots about 25 per cent of investigated plants. In the same places the root and crown rot started to develop beginning from the next year. However, as the infection was small, the prognoses for winter survival in 1997/98 could be good. Wintering resulted decreasing in weight of the grown and in number of tillers by 32...35 per cent. The DM content in the crown decreased from 12.2...17.5 per cent to 4.8...6.6 per cent to the spring of 1996 and 1997, respectively. The diameter of the tap root diminished by 9...13 per cent during the first wintering only
