The economic characteristics of variety 'Ellerslie I'
1998
Bender, A.
On the base of field trials, conducted at Jogeva (58deg 57' northern latitude, 26deg 24' eastern longitude, mean annual air temperature 4.4 deg C, amount of precipitation 655 mm), one can state that the performance of economically important traits is significantly poorer on the variety 'Ellerslie I' compared with the local variety 'Jogeva 118'. Its winter survival, dry matter yield and seed yield were 28 per cent; 45.3 per cent and 44.5 per cent lower, respectively, than those of the standard variety when two-cut harvest regime was applied. Variety 'Ellerslie I' was succumbed to the standard variety 'Jogeva 118' also in the 1000 seed weight (-0,14 g) and the content of hard seeds (+11.5 per cent). Hence the Canadian hybrid alfalfa variety 'Ellerslie I', advertised as self-fertile, does not have any advantages when cultivated in Estonian climatic conditions
