Until 1994 the animals of fur-bearing farms were not examined for trichinellosis in Estonia. The need for examination croped up in 1994, when trichinellosis in domestic pigs was diagnosed for the first time in Estonia. There were examined 4 farms: ReNa fur-bearing animal farm (Hiiumaa Island), Salutaguse fur-bearing animal farm (Raplamaa), Audru fur-breeding animal farm (Paernumaa) and Pajusti fur-bearing (Laeaene-Virumaa). Altogether muscle samples of 106 fur-bearing animals were examined for trichinellosis. On the ReNa fur-bearing animal farm 18 captured brown rats were examined. Trichinella species were identified in the Trichinella Reference Centr in Rome. 3 blue foxes and 1 brown rat from the ReNa fur-bearing animal farm were infected with Trichinella spiralis. 2 blue foxes and 1 silver fox from the Pajusti fur-bearing animal farm were infected with T.nativa. Trichinella invasion in brown rats shows a possible trichinellosis transmission line between rats and domestic animals and rats and wild animals
