The content of crude fibres in forages and its impact on digestibility of organic matter

The nutritive value of forages varied to a great extent within the samples (n=1160). Minimal and maximal content of protein in silages differed 3 times, content of crude fibre 2.5 and digestibility of organic matter 2 times. Forage with the higher content of crude fibre originated from grass sward. The nutritive value of herbage plants according to van Soest indicated the superiority of legumes. The presence of white clover in pasture sward had a positive effect at optimum concentrations of 30...50 per cent of white clover. The decay in the nutritive value of grass-clover mixtures sward, accompanied by the ageing process was slower than that of grasses. During the ageing process of grassland plants the content of crude fibre increased in legumes by 0.4 per cent and in grasses by o.5 per cent per day. Determination of in sacco digestibility revaled that forages prepared from young fresh herbage with low content of crude fibre had higher digestibility than that of forages prepared from older plants. The digestibility of organic matter had strong relationships with the content of crude fibre. Regression equations for main forages were calculated depending on their species content
