Influence of the time of the first cut and the annual number of cuts on the yield of forage legumes
1998
Viiralt, R. | Kabanen, N.
To study the productivity, nutritive value, persistency and optimum cutting regime of valuable cultivars (cv) of forage legumes in 1995 a complex field trial on Pseudopodzolic soil at the Eerika Agronomical Experimental Station was carried out. The experiment included cultivars of fodder galega (1), birdsfoot trefoil (1), red clover (4), white clover (1) and Swedish clover (1). To clarify the optimum utilization regime 9 different times of the 1st cut was used in the trial: from the 20th of May to the 23rd of July, mainly at 7-day intervals. According to the date of the 1st cut the annual number of cuts by trial treatments varied in the limits of 2...4: treatm. 1,2 and 3 - four cuts, treatm. 4,5,6 and 7- three cuts, treatm. 8 and 9 - two cuts. Fertilizer background was N 0, P 35 and K 83 kg ha sup(-1) annually. As an average of the first 2 harvest years the dry matter (DM) yield was increased by the reduction in the annual number of cuts: considerably more DM was obtained by 3 or 2 cuts than in the case of 4 ones. But the annual yield of crude protein (CP) from legume cultivars was unexpectedly of a relatively slight dependence on the frequency of cutting, while the CP yield from plots of fodder galega cut twice was even somewhat higher (22...25 per cent) than that by 3 or 4 cuts
