[Relationship between digestibility of grass and maintenance of cultivated pastures]
1998
Marciauskas, S. (Lithuanian Institute of Animal Science, Baisogala (Lithuania))
Seven trials were carried out to determine the organic and dry matter digestibilities of grass in vitro. The organic matter digestibility of orchard grass in vitro become worse after the second week of grass growth on all levels of nitrogen fertilization. The digestibility of organic matter was the highest in spring, lower after the third grazing and the lowest after the first and second grazings. The dry matter digestibility of grass in vitro decreased significantly in spring after six weeks growth, when the fibre content amounted to over 30. The highest amount of digestible organic matter in the orchard grass was obtained at four grazings with four cows/ha or five grazings with 3.1 cows/ha. The amount of digestible dry matter per hectare was insignificantly lower at all levels of nitrogen fertilization if the medium-maturing sward was used from 3 to 5 times per season.
