Evaluation of biologic and economic quality of red clover varieties and perspective lines
1999
Jansone, B. (Latvian Univ. of Agriculture, Skriveri (Latvia). Skriveri Research Centre)
The role of red clover as the main forage crop in summer and winter periods used both in pure stand and in mixtures with forage grasses is explained. As most of red clover varieties were developed long ago, the major aim of plant breeders in Latvia now is to create new high-yielding disease resistant perennial diploid and tetraploid varieties suitable for local conditions and able to compete with the foreign ones. Field trials carried out at the Skriveri Research Centre in the period of 1996-1998 to compare and evalute the biologic and economic qualities of new perspective red clover varieties are discussed. During the trials it was established that the new tetraploid red clover varieties "Agra" and "Skriveru tetra" outyielded diploid varieties by 125-130 %. They survive in swards for 3 years and have a high dry matter content.
