[Preservation of vegetable genetic resources]

According to the Convention on Biological Diversity signed by Latvia genetic resources include genetic material of an actual and potential value. Plant genetic resources comprise all cultivated plants and a number of their relatives. As in the last 40 years the number of maintained vegetable varieties of Latvian origin has dramatically decreased and seeds of many local varieties are not available the work of preservation of the local vegetable genotypes has been started. It includes collecting, description, evaluation, renewal and inbreeding of local vegetable genotypes. In the given article the methods and the results of the work are presented.
