[Agronomy practices to ameliorate the effects of drought in dryland maize in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca] | Practicas agronomicas para aminorar efectos por sequia en maiz de temporal en los valles centrales de Oaxaca

During the 1994-1995 spring-summer agriculture cycles, an experiment was established with the objective of learning the response of some agricultural practices on the grain and stubble production of rainfed maize in the Oaxaca Central Valley. The agricultural practices studied to reduce the effect of drought were: the aplication of cattle manure, the use of a drought tolerant variety, seed soaking, continuous seeding, mulching, reduced tillage and detasseling. These practices were combined in three treatments in addition to the traditional methods. The design was a complete randomized block with four replications. Each replication was located in a different soil class: fluvisol (Reyes Mantecon, Centro), feozem (Santo Domingo Barrio Bajo, Etla), regosol (San Juan Guelavia, Tlacolula) and cambisol (Colonia Emiliano Zapata, Zaachila). In 1996 the best treatment was validated. The rainfall was 23.9% less that normal; the reproductive and ripeness stages were more afected in 1994; sowing and emergence stages were more affected in 1995. The results of each agricultural practice indicated a general tendency to improve: in early emergence, plant height, low levels of infertile plants; weight, diameter and length of the ear of corn; grain weight and available mosture. Only loged plants, bulk density, and water intake, showed negative effects from these agricultural practices. The combined effects of the agricultural practices evaluated indicate a statistically significant increase of 570 and 1,093 kg/ha for grain and stubble yields, respectively. Treatment three (cattle manure, seed soaking, continuous seeding and detasseling) is the most economically feasible option to be adopted by the farmer

Durante los ciclos agricolas PV-1994 y 1995 se condujo una investigacion de maiz de temporal en los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca para evaluar el efecto de diferentes practicas agronomicas sobre algunas caracteristicas del suelo y el rendimiento de grano y de rastrojo, y en 1996 se valido el mejor tratamiento experimental. Las practicas agronomicas para aminorar el efecto por sequia fueron: aplicacion de estiercol de bovino, variedad tolerante a sequia, remojado de semilla, siembra a chorrillo, cubierta vegetal, labranza reducida y desespigue, que se agruparon en tres tratamientos. Los dos primeros (T-1 y T-2) incluyeron todas estas practicas cambiando solo la variedad, y el tercero (T-3) contemplo la aplicacion de estiercol, remojado de semilla, siembra a chorrillo y desespigue; el testigo fue la siembra tradicional del productor. Cada repeticion del experimento se establecio bajo un diseno de bloques al azar en localidades con tipo de suelo diferentes: fluvisol (Reyes Mantecon, Centro), feozem (Santo Domingo Barrio Bajo, Etla), regosol (San Juan Guelavia, Tlacolula) y cambisol (Colonia Emiliano Zapata, Zaachila). La intensidad de la sequia fue 23.9% menos cantidad de lluvia de la que normalmente ocurre. Al comparar la humedad aprovechable (H.A.) del suelo contra los requerimientos minimos del cultivo, en general se tuvo un deficit de un 14.3%, que afecto severamente a las etapas reproductivas y llenado de grano en 1994; en siembra y emergencia en 1995. Los resultados mostraron que las practicas agronomicas tienden a mejorar las posibilidades de cosecha mediante: una mayor velocidad de emergencia de plantulas, mayor altura, menos plantas infertiles y valores mayores para longitud, diametro y peso de mazorca, asi como para peso de grano y H.A. del suelo. Solo las variables plantas acamadas, densidad aparente y velocidad de infiltracion, resultaron afectadas negativamente. A pesar de disponer de menos lluvia, el efecto conjunto de las practicas agronomicas se tradujo en incrementos diferenciales sobre el testigo, estadisticamente significativos, de 570 y 1,093 kg/ha de grano y rastrojo, respectivamente.
