Luzviminda is one of the Agrarian reform areas of Puerto Princesa, Palawan [Philippines] located 30 km south from the city proper. The area which is about 1,339 ha agricultural is dominantly undulating to hilly with flat land in valley bottoms. Through Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) conducted in 1994, it was found out that erosion is a major problem in the locality as brought about by continuous cropping of upland rice and corn. In addition, source of income for the community is limited though they have market considering the short distance to the city. In order to address the erosion problem and to make the area more profitable, the DA-PAES conducted a project in the site to increase farm productivity and profitability through proper farm management. The project started with four farmer cooperators with an area of 2500 sq m each developed into Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT). Farmers were trained on the technologies of hilly land farming including contouring of their farms. After which napier grass and ipil-ipil seeds were planted for the heifers received by each of the cooperator. Recommended cashew varieties, Mitra and Recto were used as base crops. Cash crops, corn followed by mungbean were also planted following contour system. The project developed a mechanism on the assurance for the farmers to care for the livestock to sustain production of cattle in the community. Further, during the 3 years project implementation, the scheme showed an increasing MBCR from 1995 from 1.64 to 2.21 in 1997. The study also contributed to the program of the DA to increase sources of seeds of good varieties of cashew also started bearing in 1998
