Growth and yield performance of rice cultivars grown in lowland irrigated and upland stress conditions

Water stress affects plant growth and development and ultimately, yield. A field experiment was conducted at Kyoto Univ. Crop Science experimental station to evaluate the effect of water stress at the vegetative phase of 4 rice cultivars on growth and yield. The 4 cultivars used were Senshou, Nipponbare, IET 1444 and IRAT 13; Echinochloa oryzicola, was the control plant. Drought stress at the vegetative phase significantly affected plant height and leaf area of the test cultivars. Tiller number per hill and leaf dry matter were not significantly affected, except for IRAT 13. Shoot dry matter was significantly affected by water deficit. At maturity, all cultivars grown in the stressed upland field were significantly shorter than those grown in the lowland field under continuous irrigation. There were no significant differences on the number of productive tillers per plant. Shoot dry matter of IRAT 13 and IET 1444 in the stressed upland were significantly higher than those in the irrigated lowland by 40 percent and 32 percent respectively. At the vegetative phase, plant height was significantly affected by water stress and the cultivars did not recover even after rewatering, resulting in a shorter plant height at maturity. Flowering and maturity of all rice cultivars were delayed from 6 to 11 and 16 to 23 days, respectively. The yields of upland cultivars Senshou, IET 1444, and IRAT 13 were slightly reduced by water stress, while that of Japanese lowland cultivar Nipponbare was greatly reduced. No significant differences on the number of productive tillers among the rice cultivar test were observed, except for 10-20 percent whitehead (spikelet sterility) in Nipponbare
