Four tropical and locally adapted corn hybrids converted with MON 810 Bt gene, from Bacillus thuringiensis var. Kurstaki were evaluated together with the non-coverted counterpart, and local hybrids IPB 911 and IPB 3367 as checks under CL4 containment facility at IRRI for resistance against the Asiatic Corn Borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee. The objective of this study is to determine the degree of resistance of the converted corn hybrids as a basis of decision to incorporate the Bt gene into superior tropical and locally developed materials for future field testing and commercialization. Cut-leaf, stalk and pith assay and repeated artificial infestation with neonate larvae were conducted on the test plants. From the cut-leaf, pith and stalk assay, results showed that the Bt corn hybrids exhibited highly resistant reaction as indicated by the high percentage of larval mortality compared with the non-Bt entries. The transgenic corn hybrids also showed high level of resistance throughout the repeated infestation of corn borer larvae in terms of leaf feeding, stalk and ear damage
