[Conservation of endangered animals of the Philippines: are current reproductive technologies applicable?]
1997
Capitan, S.S.
The Philippines has a number of wild animal species facing the threat of extinction. The most threatened endemic animals have very limited ranges and several of them are single island endemics. Exponential increase in human population, habitat degradation, and hunting have been identified as the main culprits and they remain as constant threats to the current ecological crisis. Indeed, several programs have been started toward the development of conservation strategies which embrace a variety of fundamentally important activities such as habitat protection, field research, conservation education, and captive breeding. The captive breeding activities include monitoring of the reproductive status of the animals, stock multiplication and propagation, where the application of modern reproductive technologies could be realized. This, however, will need a thorough knowledge of the management of wild species and the investment of appropriate resources. The advantages of a number of possibilities offered by the current techniques in reproduction are presented in this paper, emphasizing the practical limitations imposed when employed in wild species
