A study was conducted to examine the effect of inclusion of Livol, a herbal tonic, in the diets of buffalo calves on their performance. Nine growing buffaloes were selected and grouped into three, each having three animals and were supplied with three diets: (A) Soaked rice straw (SS) + concentrate mixture (CM) + green grass; (B) SS + CM + green grass + 10 g Livol and; (C) SS + CM + green grass + 15 g Livol, in such a manner that each group received any one diet. Soaked straw was prepared by soaking chopped rice straw in urea-water for 2 h. Concentrate mixture consisted of wheat bran, til oil cake and molasses. The results indicated that soaking of straw increases its crude protein (CP) content from 3.0 to 6.6 percent. Dry matter (DM) intake of animals of group C, receiving 15 G Livol was the highest followed by that of group B (10 g Livol) and of group A, respectively. The differences among the values were significant (P0.01). Digestibility values for DM, CP, crude fibre (CF) and ether extract (EE) were insignificantly (P0.05) higher in animals of group C (15 Livol) than those of groups B and A. Significantly (P0.01) higher live weight gain was observed in animals of group C receiving 15 g Livol than those in animals of group B and A receiving 10 g and no Livol, respectively. Although there was no significant difference between live weight gain in animals of group B containing 10 g Livol and those of group A containing no Livol, the value was higher in the former group than that of control. Plasma glucose level in treatment groups B and C were higher than that of the control group (A), however, the level of total serum protein was slightly higher in the group receiving 15 G Livol (C) than the other groups. Supplementation of Livol at 15 g per day may be useful for growing buffalo calves
