Effect of peptidoglycan-tetrahydrofolic acid on the performance of sows and piglets under different management conditions

The effects of peptidoglycan-tetrahydrofolic acid combination as feed additive was investigated in sixty sows from three farms. Ten sows from each farm were fed basal gestating rations containing peptidoglycan-tetrahydrofolic acid (treatment group). Another ten sows from each farm were fed the same basal rations containing ground corn at the rate of 100 mg/kg of feed as placebo (control group). The mean litter size at birth and mean litter size at weaning for the treatment group were significantly higher than that of the control group (P less than 0.05). The mean average daily gain of the treatment group was significantly higher than the control group (P less than 0.05). The mean rate of stillbirth in the treatment groups of the three farms was higher than that of the control group (P less than 0.05). Cost-benefit analysis of using peptidoglycan-tetrahydrofolic acid as feed additive shows that treatment groups gained higher profits than control groups, ranging from P463.70 to P3340.48 per liter. The benefits gained by using peptidoglycan-tetrahydrofolic acid combination as feed additive in pregnant and lactating sows suggests that these additives can be useful in improving production and reproduction performance of pigs
