Catastrophes of 1997 El Nino and 1998 typhoons (Loleng and Illiang) resulted in a drastic reduction of the availability of seeds for 1998 wet season of rice farmers of Cagayan Valley [Philippines]. The reduction had two effects: lower yields and genetic erosion. The paper lists a number of factors responsible for the reduction in diversity. Implication for crop biodiversity research and crop extension practices are discussed
