Particleboard production from cotton stalks

Laboratory size boards (18 mm x 45 cm x 50 cm) were produced using urea formaldehyde as binder. Single- and three-layer boards with 8 percent, 10 percent and 12 percent resin contents, and 400 kg/cu m, 500 kg/cu m and 600 kg/cu m board densities were tested in the study. Results indicated that board density is the most critical factor in producing good quality particleboard from cotton stalks. This is strongly revealed when only the 600 kg/cu m density at any level of resin content for the single- and three-layer boards generally passed all the standards set by PHILSA in terms of mechanical properties. In terms of dimensional stability, only three-layer boards with 600 kg/cu m density at both the 10 percent and 12 percent resin content passed the standard. These suggested that the optimum board density and resin content for the production of a three-layer particleboard from cotton stalks are 600 kg/cu m and 10 percent, respectively. For the single-layer boards, 600 kg/cu m density at 8 percent resin is the best treatment combination. It costs P272.57 to produce a particleboard from cotton stalks while the wholesale price per board is P400. The net income that can be derived is P127.43 per piece with 1.47 BCR and 46.75 percent ROI
