Determination of sweeteners, benzoate and caffeine in carbonated non-alcoholic beverages by reversed-phase liquid chromatography

Balderrama, J.E. | Parce, C.J.
A simple and rapid method for simultaneous determination of acesulfame- K, aspartame, saccharin, sodium benzoate, and caffeine in non-alcoholic beverages was validated using the Shimadzu LC system. The additives were separated on a Shimpack C18 column with a mobile phase composed of methanol-acetic acid water (17 + 15 + 78) while the column oven temperature was set at 40 deg C and the UV absorption measured at 254 nm wavelength. The retention time and detection limit for each additive were described. Measurement repeatability of the standards and their percent recoveries from spiked samples ranged from 2.5 percent to 3.2 percent and from 97.5 percent to 110.2 percent, respectively. Direct single stem method of analysis was used to detect the levels of additives present in different brands of cola and non-cola carbonated beverages. All additives detected only one type of sweetener (aspartame). The instability of aspartame in these beverages were confirmed as the samples analyzed after marked dates had lower levels of aspartame and had notable loss in sweetness. Consumers were advised to take note of date markings on aspartame sweetened beverages and avoid those without them, especially the imported products
