Populations of methane-oxidizing bacteria in paddy soil and rice rhizosphere as affected by rice straw and cellulose addition

A field experiment was set up as third rice cultivation, which was part of a three-year field experiment to evaluate the effect of application of rice straw and cellulose (at 4 t and 10 t/ha) on the populations of methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) and on rice plant growth. The populations of MOB in the paddy soil and rice rhizophere were monitored throughout the different growth stages of rice using the most probable number method with the NMS medium. Straw application at 4 t/ha and 10 t/ha increased the MOB populations in the soil at rice middle-growing stages, while after heading the soil MOB populations in the straw-applied plots declined to the level of the control. After harvest, the soil MOB populations in all treatments exhibited above 10 to the fourth power/g dry soil. On the other hand, application of rice straw appeared not effecting on the MOB populations in rice rhizophere. The rhizopheric MOB in all treatment exhibited similar patterns. They were high at 27 DAT, then declined at 59 DAT, and increased again at around rice heading stage. Application of cellulose at 10 t/ha gave low levels of MOB population from 21 DAT to after harvest compared to the other treatments
