The effect of different sowing rates of oats on plant number, dry matter yield at various stages of growth, growth rate kg/ha/day, number of tillers per plant and crude protein percentage were studied. The sowing rates were 50, 100, 500 kg/ha in 1988 and 50, 100, and 200 kg/ha in 1989. As expected, higher rates of sowing, produced greater number of seedlings in both years. Similarly, with increasing seed rate, dry matter yield increased significantly in the early stages of growth. However, late in season, there was no significant difference in the dry matter yield between 100 and 500 kg (1988) and 100 and 200 kg (1989). The dry matter yield obtained with 50 kg seed rate/ha was significantly lower than the higher sowing rates upto the latest harvest stage of the crop. The number of tillers per plant decreased significantly as the seed rate increased during both years. However, the sowing rates had no effect on the crude protein percentage of oats.
