Seasonal increase in biomass and changes in phytochemical composition of parsnip organs (Pastinaca sativa L.)

The biomass increase of individual organs reveals a distinct rhythm - the leaves grow mainly until the end of September, whereas the roots still grow even in October. From July to October, the content of dry matter in the roots varied within the range of 18.7-19.7 percent; total sugars 2.7-4,. percent; L-ascorbic acid 7.2-18.2 mg percent and essential oils within the range of 0.35-50 percent. Parsnip leaf blade are an abundant source of L-ascorbic acid (43.5-154.0 mg percent), they contain from 17.9 to 19.8 percent dry matter, from 1.7 to 2.6 percent total sugars as well as from 0.27 to 0.40 percent essential oil. Parsnip is a valuable essential oil plant - it may be obtained from leaves in the quantities from 3.9 to 10.0 kg from ha and from 5.8 to 30.7 kg from ha and from roots in the quantities 5.8-30.7 kg from ha
