Effect of soil and fertilization on the biomass and phenolic acids content in coneflower (Echinacea purpurea Moench)

A pot experiment was carried out during two years on sandy and loamy soil materials differing in acidity and nutrients content. Two levels of fertilization were applied prior to seeding. Dry mass of the herbs, roots and rhizomes were weighted separately every year using highly efficient liquid chromatography. The samples were purified by the method of solid phase extraction. The yield of biomass depended on both: soil type and fertilization. Higher level of fertilization gave a significant increase of biomass on both soil. The effect of fertilization depended on the soil type. In general, sandy material with higher dose of fertilization gave an increase of phenolic acids content was slightly decreased with the exception of the first year
