Participatory on-farm trials at irrigation scheme locations in South Africa
1999
Walker, S.
Although much work has been done over the years at experiment stations, relatively few results have been successfully adopted by farmers. The tailoring and transfer of relevant technologies can be greatly improved through on-farm trials where farmers participate in planning, decision-making, execution, and evaluation. This paper describes the Farming Systems Research and Extension (FSRE) approach in which researchers worked with farmers at selected irrigation scheme locations in South Africa to identify areas in the current farming system that could be improved or changed. The process involved full participation of community members, various government departments, and non-government organizations. The outcomes have been mixed, but provide encouragement.
