Co-operation on transboundary water management in Europe

The most recent developments of international co-operation on the protection of transboundary waters are discussed in this paper. Special attention is hereby given to joint bodies as the key instrument for governing co-operation. This work describes the role of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) concerning the management of transboundary rivers in Europe. The LIN/ECE Convention on the Protection of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes is presented and measures in order to promote its implementation are elaborated. It also provides an overview of the establishment and activities of existing joint bodies in the catchment areas of the Rhine, Danube, Elbe and Oder Rivers. And finally, current results are discussed and the work, which remains in order to promote the protection of Europe's waters, is illustrated
