The chlorophyte species composition of five fountains in Bratislava, the capital of the Slovak Republic, was investigated in 1988-1989 and sporadically thereafter. The species composition of the algal assemblages in the fountains varied but were nevertheless characteristic of such types of small water bodies. To the dominant taxa belonged representatives of the chlorococcalean genera Oocystella (O. piscinalis, O. parva, O. nephrocytioides), Scenedesmus (S. obliquus, S. abundans, S. subspicatus, S. armatus), Choricystis (C. nana) and Chlorella (C. homosphaera, C. vulgaris, C. kessleri). However, in some investigated fountains other chlorophyte groups dominated, e.g. flagellates (Chlamydomonas sp. div.), filamentous green algae (Stichococcus bacillaris, Fottea stichococcoides, Geminella, Chlorosarcinopsis), zygnematacean algae (Mougeotia sp. steril., Spirogyra sp. steril., Zygnema commune) or desmids (Cosmarium laeve)
