Utilization of effluent from biogas production as nitrogen fertilizer for guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) and mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) grown on Kamphaeng Saen soil series

Effluent from biogas production (EFB) was tested as nitrogen source and as irrigational water for guinea grass and mungbean planted in Kamphaeng Saen soil. The field experiments were set as randomized complete block design with 4 replications. Both crops were planted consecutively 3 times in the same places with the same repeated treatments. In guinea grass case, the EFB could produce grass yield as much as the 25 kg N/rai chemical fertilizer could. With proximate analysis, the grasses those received the both treatments were more or less the same in nutrient amount and nutritional quality. In mungbean case, application of the EFB, either as nitrogen source at the rate of 3 kg N/rai of as irrigational water for the whole season showed no depressing effect on the mungbean growth and yield, plant nitrogen content, and nodulation in terms of nodule number. EFB could replace irrigational water for the whole planting period of both crops. It could substitute irrigational water 160,000 l/rai/month for the grass and as much as 240,000 l/rai for the whole water consumption of mungbean. Long-term application of EFB could chemical properties. The soil tended to be more fertile. And the physical properties were likely improved as well. In addition, no increase of nitrate content in ground water was observed.
