Supply response and human population carrying capacity assessment of paddy and corn in Southern Mindanao, Philippines
1992
Dominciano, D. Ramos JR.
This study is an attempt to provide an insight and deeper understanding of the supply aspect and potential human population carrying capacity of paddy and white corn in Southern Mindanao. The main objective of the study is to assess the factors that influence food supply availability of paddy and white corn in the region and present them in different situations where the level of supply may occur in the future. Basic data used in this study was obtained from different sources and are all secondary. Then they were analyzed using the multiple regression technique of estimation. Economic factors are found to be influencial in determining the supply of paddy and corn in a particular period of time. Supply of white corn is responsive to changes in its own price, while the supply of paddy is more responsive to changes in price of inputs than changes in its own price. Governments' effort to enhance production of paddy and corn met a minimal success due mainly on ineffectiveness in implementation process. Food supply of white corn was found out to be adequate for the population needs from 1991 to 2000. For paddy, only one scenario depicts an adequate supply up to 2000. The potential human population that can be sustain by the possible future supply of paddy and corn in Southern Mindanao ranges from 2.18-3.92 million and from 5.68-7.95 million persons, respectively. The study suggests that price support policy of the Philippine government be kept on force to protect and encourage farmers to produce more. Likewise, government fertilizer subsidy program must be maintained.
