1995
Boonchana Wongchana
Morphological characteristic of two varieties of Corchorus olitorius L. (molokheiya and local variety), effect of spacing (15*15, 20*20, 25*25 and 30*30 centimeter) and harvesting times (30, 40, 50 and 60 days after sowing), and nutrition value (using A.O.A.C. methods) of molokheiya were studied at Tropical Vegetable Research Center (TVRC), Kasetsart University, Kamphaengsean campus, Nakhonpathom province during Febuary, 1994 to June, 1995. Morphological characteristic is different between two varieties. Molokheiya leaf color were darker than local variety, stem and branch color were green and red, but local variety were green only. Leaf area index and fresh weight leaf of molokheiya at 8 weeks after sowing were 5.88 and 27.47 gm/plant while local variety were 8.26, and 35.85 gm/plant. The result of spacing and harvesting time of molokheiya showed that spacing 15*15 centimeter and harvested at 60 days after sowing gave the hightest leaf yield per unit area (4.98 kg/5 square m.). But spacing 30*30 centimeter showed the maximum yield per plant (53.78 gm). The nutritive values per 100 gm of molokheiya fresh weight leaf were 5.52 gm protein, 1.79 gm fiber, 296.05 mg calcium, 96.62 mg phosphorus, 6.52 mg iron, 56.78 mg vitamin C and 3,280 I.U. vitamin A.
