Study on the physiological maturity and seed storage of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss var. siamensis Valeton)
1996
Nisanart La-ongpant
Development of fruits and seeds of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss var. siamensis Valeton) was investigated in order to study the physiological maturity stage and determine the appropriate time for seed collection. The study materials consisted of fruits (color change, weight, moisture content) and seeds (weight, moisture content, germination capacity, seed vigor). Fruits with the ages of 7 14 21 28 35 42 49 56 63 and 70 days after flowering (DAF) were successively collected from selected trees in Kampaengsaen Campus, Nakornpathom Province. Seed physiological maturity stage of neem was 70 DAF with the average dry weight of 1.76 g. The recommended and suitable seed collection period was 56-70 DAF, when the neem fruits turn yellow. At this stage, neem seeds has 93-98 percent germination and 89-93 percent vigor. The dry weight of collected seeds ranged between 1.51-1.76 g. Concerning the study on the seed storage condition, the comparision in green and yellow fruits of neem were investigated under 40 50 60 70 80 90 and 100 percent relative humidity (RH) and 10, 20, 30 deg C controlled condition. The suitable storage condition was 80 percent RH with the temperature of 10 or 20 deg C. Seeds from green fruits showed better storage qualities than the yellow ones. Green neem fruits could be kept for 6 weeks and the germination percent dropped to 71.91-74.73 percent while seed moisture content was ranged between 43.56-47.34 percent.
