Relationships between Auxins, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) and ethylene and senescence of pollinated Dendrobium Pompadour flowers

Relationships between auxins, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), ethylene and senescence of pollinated Dendrobium Pompadour flowers were studied. The results showed that pollinated flowers of Den. Pompadour senesced rapidly. Pollination caused earlier senescence of petals and sepals and the visible senescence symptoms of flower epinasty, petal wilting, veination and flower fading were detectable within 15 hours after pollination. The main events after pollination that led to enhance flower senescence were the increase in ethylene sensitivity and production. Ovaries of pollinated flowers increased in size. ACC synthase activity and ACC content in the column with pedicel increased many times higher than did petals and sepals after pollination. Pollinated flowers were more sensitive to exogenous ethylene resulting in earlier senescence. ACC and NAA application induced earlier senescence of petals and sepals and ethylene production. NAA application induced ovary development, while ACC application did not. In addition, ACC induced the increased ethylene production only after ACC application, while ethylene production in pollinated flowers occurred late with higher rates and more continuous production.
