Factors affecting reduction of cassava land area of farmers in Rayong province

Objectives of this research were to study the factors affecting reduction of cassava land area of farmers under Agricultural Structure and Production System Adjustment Project, number of cassava land area reduction, their problems and needs. The sample were 185 farmers. The data were collected by using the interview schedule, and statistically analyzed for percentage, arithmetic mean, and chi-square. The results revealed that most farmers were male; their average age was 45 years and they finished grade 4. The average of family members, farm size, household income (in 1994), and labour in farmwork, were 4.7 members, 45.6 rai, 78,000 baht. (one-third of them got less than 50,000 baht) and 2.5 persons, respectively. The average cassava selling price was 0.73 baht/kg. Most farmers (94.6 percent) participated in plan production. They wanted to be supported in nursery plants (98.9 percent), technology (96.2 percent), marketing (79.5 percent) low interest (47.6 percent), and water source (45.4 percent). Most of information source (88.6 percent) were from individuals. The average of cassava land area reduction was 13 rai. For factors affecting reduction of cassava land area, the important factors were low price of cassava, lack of labour, low soil quality respectively. It was also found other factors by a hypothesis testing as follow, family members, farm size, household income, participation in plan production, and information sources. According to their problems, the researcher suggested that steps and ways of nurery plants supportion should be improved, studying problems and solving about lack of labour in agricultural sector, managing water sources before provision of producing factors, including soil quality improving.
