Tha aim of this paper was to present basic characteristics of two main, autochthonous breeds of horses in Yugoslavia: domestic mountain pony and nonius. These breeds of horses are involved in program for protection of animal genetic resources. A general program for protection also have presented in this paper. In the first phase of the program IN SITU method for conservation will be used. At the same time it would make a plan for EX SITU conservation.
