On the basis of the statistical data, literature used and our investigations, number of heads of goats in the world and in Yugoslavia were presented. The main breed characteristics, origin and morphological and productive traits of goat breeds in Yugoslavia: Saanen, Alpine, Domestic White and autochthonous Balkan breed were elaborated. Autochthonous Balkan breed was elaborated with more details than other breeds in regard to the geographical distribution, some biochemical-genetic research, as well as to the degree of danger of extinction and measures of protection. In 1980, in former Yugoslavia, the total number of goats was approximately 600,000. In present Yugoslavia, the total number of heads of goats is 325,000 (275,000 heads in Serbia and 50,000 heads in Montenegro). From 17 alellomorph genes, described up to now in six examined polymorph systems in goatsm, 12 of them was found in blood of Domestic Balkan breed of goat. In Yugoslavia, present number of purebred heads of goats is estimated on some tens of thousands. Because of a decreasing process of Domestic Balkan breed population is still in progress, it should be taken measures for protection of this breed.
