Contamination of poultry feedmixes with bacteria and fungi

During a three-year period (1994-1996), a total number of 131 samples originating from the Republic of Serbia (Yugoslavia), intended for feeding all categories of poultry were analyzed, including feedmixes for starting broilers (40 samples), growing broilers (20 samples), breeders (7 samples) and laying hens (64 samples). Standard methods were applied in analysis and the obtained results were compared with values stated in the Book of Regulations on the maximum tolerable levels of harmful substances and components in feed mixes (Yugoslav Official Register, 2/90). The number of saprophyte bacteria varied greatly according to the type of feedmix as well as according to particular years. Also, the types of isolated bacteria (Bacillus sp., Staphylococcus sp., coliformn bacteria, Micrococcus sp., etc.) showed considerable heterogenicity. All samples contained tolerable numbers of saprophyte bacteria, while only one sample contained clostridia above the tolerable level. The number and species of saprophytic moulds (Mucor sp., Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., Fusarium sp., etc.), show considerable diversity depending on the type of feedmix and period of the year examination.
