Throughout 1991 and 1992 the presence of Lepidosaphes ulmi was monitored in orchards and on private farms in 17 localities in Serbia (Yugoslavia). The biology of the species was monitored in two localities. The intensity of the attack was determined on cv. Golden Delicious, Jonathan, Melrose, Rother Boscop and Starking using the Borhsenius ocular 5-degree system. Based on the obtained results it is concluded that Lepidosaphes ulmi had two generation per year. The developmental larvae stages were investigated, too. The presence of Lepidosaphes ulmi was determined in orchards and private farms in eight localities where there was no chemical control. On the other hand, a regular insecticide application was efficient in controlling Lepidosaphes ulmi in orchards. Of the five apple cultivars analyzed the attack was the most intensive on cv. Golden Delicious followed by Melrose and Jonathan compared with the cv. Rotter Boskop and Starking. Lepidosaphes ulmi is a polyphagous species and presents a major apple pest. It attacks both the woody parts of the plant and fruits decreasing their market value. Intensive attacks may provoke drying out of the young trunks. Chemical control is recommendable.
