Water problems in a dairy - supply, quality, treatment

Basic aspects of water problems in a dairy are discussed. Water supply problems and water consumption problems pointed out and a review of measures for reducing of water consumption is given. Water for production process in a dairy (for washing, as a raw material) must be of drinking water quality, but for particular use in a dairy these are additional demands. Particular characteristics of water in respect of drinking water quality are discussed. Water treatment processes for particular purposes are discussed. Two cases are observed: (1) using of water from waterworks, with correction of it's composition; and (2) using of water from factory sources, with it's treatment in a factory. Knowledge of all relevant alternatives of water treatment processes, in any concrete case, is a requirement for the formulation of optimal water treatment scheme. Examples of raw water treatment schemes are given.
