Arabidopsis plants transformed with a promotor-GUS fusion for a mitotic cyclin were used to examine the spatio-temporal dynamics of lateral root initiation. In Arabidopsis lateral root initiation is a very early process. The initiation of the first lateral root takes place within 40 hours after germination at a relatively constant distance from the root tip. Lateral root primordia originate in the pericycle, after a small number of cells has been activated to divide anticlinaly following a regular cell division pattern.
