Future of Agriculture and the European Union
2000
Kivistik, J. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Inst. of Agricultural Economists)
To forecast the future of Estonian agriculture, it is necessary to first determine the functions that agriculture should perform. During the years of re-establishment of independence agriculture as a branch of national economy has been underestimated, to the extreme opinion that we can import food and it is questionable whether agriculture is neede. In fact, agriculture performs several essential functions and should fulfil them also in the future. Let us mention some of them: supplying the population with self-produced basic food; the function of primary sector in national economy with regard to its share in GDP (gross domestic product), employment and investments; preservation of rural settlement and village life; creation of holiday opportunities in natural conditions; shaping and maintenance of cultivated landscape; relieving the shortage of energy by producing renewable bioenergy
